  3. Complete your order*

*Please note: GeneDx does not accept orders or specimens from the UK or European Union (EU) countries at this time.

Here’s a more detailed look:

  1. Sign in or create an account on the GeneDx Provider Portal to get started (note: Ordering via paper TRF is also an option.)
  2. Go to the Test Menu page to find the test of interest. Additionally, you can find tests by typing the test code, name, or keyword(s) into the search field.
  3. Select the test and add it to your cart
  4. If needed, you can add additional tests to your order for concurrent or reflex testing
  5. Once you have the test(s) you would like to order listed in the “Order Details” section, select “New Order” or “Add-on Order”
    • Choose NEW ORDER when the patient is submitting a new sample to GeneDx for testing
    • Choose ADD-ON ORDER to order additional testing on a patient whose sample was previously provided to GeneDx
    • Note: Add-on orders can only be placed under the same account as the original order within the Provider Portal (please contact customer support with your order number to ensure the add-on is linked).
  6. Complete order form and upload clinic note and any supporting documentation
  7. Place order

Important: Gathering Information & Records

Providing appropriate documentation, such as a clinic note, is an important part of the ordering process for several reasons:

  • It can reduce outreach to gather required information not provided with the initial order and helps prevent holds from being placed on your test orders
  • It helps facilitate prior authorization from an insurance company, which is often required
  • A patient’s clinical documentation, paired with their genetic information, provide us the best opportunity to accurately assess variants identified and deliver actionable results

While submitting all documentation up front during the ordering process is best, we understand that can’t always happen. A clinic note must be submitted for genomics-based testing within two weeks of sample receipt. If we do not have sufficient clinical information to initiate the testing we may reach out to you.

If you need to upload documents after you’ve placed an order, you can do so by:

  • Replying to the received email request for information, and attaching the clinic note
  • Going to your account dashboard in your Provider Portal and uploading any additional medical information or clinical documents to the order in the portal
  • Send documents via fax to 201-421-2010

Step 3: Collect Samples

Next, you will collect your patients’ samples, including any parental/relative samples, and ship them to GeneDx for processing and analysis.

Sample requirements vary by test and specimen type, so please read through our Specimen Requirements Page for important details.

Step 4: Get Results

Once your results are ready, they can be accessed via the Provider Portal. They may also be emailed or faxed to you based on your reporting preferences.

Tip: You can receive automatic alerts when a report or update is available by subscribing to notifications in your Provider Portal account.

Provisional Result vs. Written Report for Xpress Testing

Provisional Results

A provisional result is given within 5-7* calendar days after the start of testing, and you will receive a full written report in two weeks.

  • A verbal call out will be attempted when the results include pathogenic and/or likely pathogenic variants in known disease-causing genes that appear to definitively explain the phenotype in this patient.
  • There are instances where (1) additional testing is necessary to confirm the presence of the variant and/or (2) additional review of the variant is needed to determine the final classification using the ACMG criteria.
  • If the variant is confirmed and/or classified as pathogenic or likely pathogenic after the verbal result has already been communicated, an update is provided to the client prior to the final written report being issued.

An email will be sent to the client letting you know when to expect the written report.

Possible Results

Genetic testing can deliver the following results:

  • Positive or diagnostic means we found a genetic change known to causes specific clinical features or a genetic disorder.
  • Negative or non-diagnostic means no genetic changes that explain your patient’s health condition were identified. In this case, depending on the test ordered, additional genetic testing or future reanalysis may be warranted.
  • Variant of uncertain significance (VUS) means we identified a genetic change, but based on the available scientific evidence and/or the provided clinical documentation or lack thereof, we cannot clearly determine whether the finding is related to your patient’s health condition at this time.
  • Secondary finding means we identified a genetic change that is unrelated to the reason you ordered testing for your patient, but is medically actionable. This information is specific to exome and genome sequencing tests, is optional to receive and occurs in ~3%1 of people.

GeneDx provides results interpretation and patient genetic counseling services.

Written Report

A written report will include all potentially clinically relevant variants as well as secondary findings (secondary findings are reported only if elected by the patient).

Mitochondrial testing

Mitochondrial testing is included as part of GenomeXpress®.
The Mitochondrial Genome and Deletion test results will be reported separately from Xpress test results with a typical turnaround time of 3-4 weeks.

*International clients will receive an email status update within 7 days.

If you have questions about Xpress testing, please reach out to our team at xpress@genedx.com.
