Using Buccal (Cheek Swabs) as a source of DNA:

We prefer, whenever appropriate, to use buccal swabs as the source of DNA for our tests. The procedure is simple and non-invasive, and can even be performed in the patient's home.

However, all Buccal Swab Kits are not created equally! Please do not use other commercially-available buccal swabs for tests at GeneDx. Our Buccal Swab Kits are stable at room temperature indefinitely prior to use. Once the sample is collected, it remains stable for weeks prior to processing, and probably for years after processing.

We are happy to mail, at no expense to you, as many kits as you need for collecting samples to be submitted to GeneDx. Just click on the "Order the Buccal Swab Kit Online" box below and fill out the information.

Buccal swabs are an acceptable source of DNA for all tests that GeneDx offers EXCEPT for the following disorders. To perform these tests, we require 1-5 mL whole blood in EDTA, purple top tube.
